Mark Vice is a contemporary visual artist whose mixed media paintings examine the interplay between human physicality, fashion and today’s society. Working with a diverse array of materials, his experimental approach results in tactile artworks that are as beautiful and enchanting as they are thought provoking. Utilising paint, fabric, glass, resin and mirror, Mark aims to create works of art that transport the viewer from the present into a moment of fantasy. Working from his Edinburgh studio, most days he can be found painting, experimenting with new mediums and updating followers via social media (@markviceart).
“For me, the process of creating art is a continual attempt to understand myself, my place in the world and the universe around me. I use art as a means to ‘get out of my head’ and to process the highly analytical way I experience the world. Recently, I feel my work has come to mirror the complex and often contradictory values that are inherent in my life and in the lives of many other modern day humans. On one hand, I have a desire to indulge in consumerism and aesthetically pleasing imagery - in particular I am drawn to highly stylised fashion that evokes feelings of fantasy and escapism. In contrast to this, I have a need to connect to a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in life that transcends such materiality. Currently I feel my greatest challenge as an artist is to balance these superficial, ‘man made’ desires with the pursuit of a authentic, rich and purposeful life. Working with paint, fabric, glass, mirror and resin, recently I have been attempting to find some happy ground by exploring the interplay between these opposing ideas.”
